Erin, who is old beyond her tender age of 12 (at least in her own mind) likes to find any excuse to stay up later than 9 PM.
Whether it is the call of nature (such calls include a book, and thus they usually last longer than a major ice age--and modesty forbids mentioning where she learned this), reading in bed, or just fooling around, she is often not in bed until well after 10 PM. Which suits her jest fine!
Last night was no different.
She goofed around with Cameron until we were able to finally extricate him and shoo him to bed, then she read in her room. At 10:07 as I was just getting ready for bed, Erin knocked on the bedroom door.
“Erin!” I gently hissed, “Why aren’t you in bed?”
“I need to ask you a question.” she replied.
After a deep sigh (I seem to be doing this more and more often!), I gave in. “OK, what is it?”
“Okay, Dad. So....when do you get your tonsils out?”
As I was pondering the deep significance of this obviously pressing question, she continued, “I want to have mine out.”
Being the ever-gentle father, I benevolently replied, “Yeah. Right. Uhuh. Well, to answer your question, probably NEVER! I’ve never had mine removed! NOW GET TO BED! NOW! NOW! NOW!”
(Cindy later explained to me that Erin had watched a Brady Bunch episode where Cindy and Mrs. Brady had both had their tonsils removed. And one of her cousins has also had hers removed. I deduced from this info that Erin was really just interested in getting lots of ice cream to eat, and this was as good a way as any to get it!)
Anyway, someone woke me up at 10:45 PM as they noisily bustled into the bedroom on the way to our bathroom, where they fiddled about in front of the mirror for 5 minutes. It was only when I saw the hulking silhouette as they came out that I realized it was Erin.
Her machinations had again achieved spectacular results!

Belated Christmas
Enjoy the slide show of our Christmas.
We had a great time sharing the day with our good friends.
The kids were happy and Santa seemed to spoil them.
I guess that is what he is supposed to do.
We hope your Christmas was just as goood as ours.

It's the snot that counts!
Tonight Erin was playing around with Ally at bedtime, and as it was time to sing Ally her bedtime song* and get her into bed, Erin picked her up and said,'Give Eeno a hug!'
Ally got a huge grin on her face, extended her arms in a hug-like manner, then deftly lowered her head and wiped her nose in an 8-inch swath on Erin's shoulder (fortunately Erin had a sweat jacket on!)
Erin yelped, 'Ally, did you wipe your nose on me?!!'
Ally grinned even more hugely!
'C'mon, give me a real hug!'
Ally reached out, extended her arms in a hug-like manner, and then tried to do it again, giggling with glee. Erin was prepared this time, and--giggling right along with Ally--lifted her up high enough to prevent her snotty behavior.
This was repeated a number of times.
Hugs from Ally, anyone?
*Ally's Bedtime Song
'Go to sleepy little baby,
Go to sleepy little baby,
And when you wake,
I'll spank your butt-cakes,
And ride a shiny little po-o-ny'

It was like 12 Dancing Princesses--on Steroids!
There was a dinner/dance at the church on New Years Eve for the entire family, and I made the mistake of trying to explain this beforehand to Ally.
I should’ve known that after all the Barbie movies she had seen that she would get kinda excited when she heard about a ‘dance.’ So every day that week she kept asking me with great expectations, 'Go to the church today?' and she would get a dejected look (or get mad) when I told her it was still a couple days off.
Of course, even I was looking forward to it. I envisioned Ally and I dancing a couple dances, with me holding her and doing the fancy footwork as we danced cheek-to-cheek. I also envisioned dancing many times with Erin, Kenner, and Cindy.
However, once the music started, Ally urged/pushed/shoved me out onto the dance floor and made it quite clear that she wasn’t going to be held--she was going to keep her feet on the floor and dance, dance dance! She took me by the hand and began doing what might be best described as the 'Tornado Dance.'
This is a dance where one partner (Ally in this case) holds onto one hand of the other partner (me) runs and runs and runs and runs around them in circles. I would keep up for a couple turns before getting dizzy, but after that I would stay in place and just skillfully pass her hand from one hand to the other as she continued revolving around me.
When Kenner tried to cut in, Ally made it very clear that she wasn't at all pleased. As Cindy carried Ally away kicking and screaming, I was then able to dance a couple with Kenner, but after that Ally again charged out and took over.
By 11 PM Ally seemed to be getting tired, so I carried her out into the hallway, hoping she would go to sleep. But the moment I walked back into the gym she perked up, said, ‘Dance, daddy, DANCE!’ and we ended up doing the tornado dance many more times.
At midnight she was still going strong!
So for the night: 10+ dances with Ally, 2~3 dances with Kenner (she showed a lot of potential!), 1 dance with Erin (though I tried to get her out to dance more!), and 1 dance together with Erin and Cindy.

From Makenna's point of view
Yesterday while Makenna and I were out shopping she told me about a time that Erin was asking Cameron to do something and he said, 'Just a sec." To which Erin replied, "There are no secs!" Thinking it was so funny because she had just said, "sex" while really talking about secs the kids all burst out laughing.
Soooo...I thought to myself why not find out what Makenna knows about sex.
Me ---"Makenna....what is sex?", I asked her.
Makenna---"You know. Like you and dad love each other."
Me----"Yes......"
Makenna-----"And you think he is Hot. You know like sexy." Giggle. Giggle. Giggle.
Ahhh...lets just hope her definition is the only one she knows for a long time!!

A girl who knows what she wants!
As I was getting Ally changed for a nap she said, "I want Daddy to put me in!" Realizing Daddy is not always available to do this I quickly obliged her and said, "Okay. Let me get Daddy."
She jumped off the bed and with added enthusiasm exclaimed
"He is my HANDSOME Daddy!!!"

You're Never Too Old for An Object Lesson
I really don't like cell phones much. They are more of a pain than an aid, but there are just enough times when they are handy enough to justify their miserable existence (as long as it doesn't cost me more than $9/month).
As such, even if I am carrying it, I rarely have it turned on. I figure that if I need it I can turn it on then.
For some reason, this drives Cindy bonkers.
I can always tell when she has tried calling me while I have been out.
The tell-tale signs are subtle, yet discernable to the seasoned expert.
One indicator is the wild look in her eyes.
A second is when--in a deceptively calm manner--she queries, 'So dear, sweetie, honey, is your cell phone perchance turned on?'
Being an expert in subliminal messaging, I have learned it is not wise to chuckle heartily and retort, 'Why? It runs down the batteries! And then I couldn't use it at all!'
So this evening I took Erin and Cambone to the Y, and as a wallet, cell phone, and keys tended to turn my sweat pants into low riders, I put them in a locker. I would like to say that I remembered to turn the cell phone off before locking it up, but that would be a lie, because I never turned it on in the first place.
We were there for a good 2 hours, which was a bit longer than I had expected. I shot hoops and exercised with Erin, and Cambone played with some friends we saw and I had forced him to say 'Hi' to.
But I digress....
We got home at 7:03, and as we walked in the door I saw a wild look in Cindy's eyes. But even before I could fully interpret the nuances of this look, a deceptively calm look came over her face, and she made the statement, 'So, you didn't have your cell phone on, did you.'
I tried to explain that the cell phone had been locked up in order to prevent an unsightly and unseemly display, and thus that I hadn't had it on my person anyway.' I produced the phone to show her that I had carried it safely home.
'Hmmm,' she said to herself, taking the phone from my hand. 'This is obviously useless.' 'Oh,' she then said brightly, 'I know what to do with things that are useless!' She then proceeded to walk into the kitchen, then she tossed it into the garbage can, a rather pleased look on her face.
Thus endeth the object lesson.
I sure hope it'll stick! (Otherwise, it may be found sticking out of my back!)
PS: Cameron fished it out.....

A Hulk Hogan of a father!?
Ally, for most of her adorable life has been a Daddy's girl. Even though I try to placate Cindy by reminding her that this also means that I am Ally's first draft whenever she has a poopy diaper, when she is being put to bed, and when she is being lifted out of the crib in the morning, there is still a bit of good-natured resentment.
You know, such as, "I carried her for 9 months and had to have her surgically removed, and yet she screams for Daddy when I try to get her out of bed after her nap time!'
Or 'I suffered from morning sickness for 3 months so I could be kicked at when I try to unbuckle her from her carseat when her daddy is nearby!?'
I was home all last week, and she was my little shadow. If she wanted to snuggle, I was there. If she wanted to get a ham sandwich for breakfast, I was there. If she wanted to play in the backyard, I was there.
Personally, I figure that dear ol' Daddy will be forgotten once she gets old enough to find out what a tight-wad I am.
So anyway, tonight I was laying her down to change her diaper before bedtime, and her head hit kinda hard on the carpeted floor. She started crying and told me to 'Go away Daddy!'
Since Cindy was in the room, I said, 'I'm sorry Ally. Do you want Mommy to change your diaper?'
Through her tears she managed to splurt out, 'No! Daddy do it!'
This led Cindy to comment, 'You could probably body-slam her and she would still prefer you!'

Nope, no Little Orphan Annie Decoder Ring yet.....
Allyson, aged a tender 2 2/3 years old, was lying on the bed as Cindy was getting her dressed, and when Kenner walked into the room, Ally called out to her,
'Whaddya want for Christmas?'
With only a slight pause--not allowing Kenner enough time to rattle off, 'I want an official Red Ryder carbine action two-hundred shot range model air rifle'--she then followed up with a twangy 'You'll shoot yer eye out kid!'
Cindy then asked her, 'Who are you? Santa Claus?'
Ally replied, 'HOhhhhhhh-HOhhhhhhhh-HOhhhhhh!!!!'
Maybe Ally watched 'A Christmas Story' a few too many times in the past couple weeks. (Fortunately we now have a Clearplay DVD player, so we can edit out the less-than-good language when watching it. She watched it unedited, but I'm pleased to say that she didn't pick up any of the salty language! Or am I being naive?)
I guess Cindy should feel lucky--Ally didn't have a boot on, and she didn't try implanting it in Cindy's forehead to push her down a Santa slide.

The youth of today.....
It was Christmas morn.
After the glee of looking at the presents under the tree wore off somewhat, Kenner thought to look over towards the kitchen counter and ask, 'Did Santa eat what I left him?'
Santa had obviously drained the egg nog, milk, and cookies, so I answered, 'Yep, he sure did!'
Erin was by me at the time, and being a Santa cynic, looked towards me with a grin, and made the following wry comment:
'We should do a DNA swab on the cup!'
It's a wonder she got any presents at all!

Faith-promoting experience
The phone rings.
It is one of Erin's friends.
Erin is downstairs.
I stand at the top of the stairs and call out to her.
She comes to the foot of the stairs (directly below me), looks up, raises her hands, and says, 'Drop it to me!'
Something in my countenance causes her to wheedlingly tack on, 'C'mon, Dad! I won't drop it!'
Taking a leap of faith, I drop it the 10 feet or so to her.
She caught it.
[You can't even begin to imagine how much I wanted to add the word, 'Amazingly,' to the head of the previous sentence!]

Erin's B-Day
On Friday Erin finally turned 12 (though she has been acting like a teenager for a good year or so already). Instead of a bunch of toys, she got more teeny-bopper gifts--lotions, balms, basic makeup, and a leg-shaving kit--and she was ecstatic!
After opening a Mary Kay mascara thingy, she even spontaneously broke out into a hymn of praise to express her deep-felt joy--
I would hazard to guess that few blog readers would have imagined that Erin would be so uninhibited....???

WWJD?
Erin, Allyson and I were driving home on Saturday from her first basketball game, and Ally got the great idea of trying to squirm and get her arms out of the buckles.
Erin noticed this and told her to get her arms back in.
Allyson blithely ignored this advice.
Erin then tried a different tack. (Which is a nautical term, right Amy R!?)
'Ally,' she sweetly cooed, 'Do you want to be like Jesus?'
Allyson (thankfully!!) replied, 'Yes!'
"Well,' Erin continued, 'Jesus would put his arms in the buckles.'
Ally finally acquiesced to this flawless--though not theologically sound--logic, put her arms back in for the rest of the trip.

Gingerbread city

All of the neighbors ended up with beautiful houses, such as this one....

but due to us having left the decorating of our house to Erin and Makenna, the results were less than stellar....

As Louis delicately put it, 'It looks like Santa BARFED on OUR house!'

A long time coming...
We have our struggles in our home. One of them includes sibling rivalry. It seems particularly bad with Cameron and Makenna. I have tried many things to try and stop it and to teach my children to love each other.
Cameron currently earns tickets for good behavior. When he get a certain amount he is rewarded with a trip to the dollar store or they can be exchanged for money (he is saving up for something). Sooo.....with that in mind I challenged him...
"If you can have a perfect day getting along with Makenna I will give you 2 tickets."
I wrote it in a notebook he keeps for notes from us and told him to check it this morning.
Makenna got out of bed at the usual time this morning while Cameron took a bath first thing.
By the time he got downstairs for breakfast she was done eating and had gone back upstairs to get ready for school. This was our conversation.
Cameron: Where is Makenna?
Me: She has already eaten and is upstairs getting dressed for school.
Cameron: How did that little sweetie eat so fast?
Okay....maybe not much to you but to me....Priceless. Come on...Cameron calling Makenna "SWEETIE!" I never thought the day would come.

Tug of War
Cindy was dropping by my work with Ally, and as the the building came in sight Cindy pointed to it and asked, 'Who is in there?'
Ally got excited and said, 'Daddy is in there!'
She then added, 'He is a handsome prince!'
To reconfirm what she had just heard, Cindy asked, 'What did you say?'
Ally replied again, 'He is a handsome prince!'
Cindy replied, 'Yes, Daddy is MY handsome prince.'
Ally retorted, 'No, MY handsome prince!'
Cindy, her voice edged in carbide, cooed back, "No, Daddy is MY handsome prince!'
Knowing when to quit (the only one of the three who has mastered this trait), Ally relented. 'Yes, Daddy is YOUR handsome prince.'
And then added, 'And you go to the ball!"
Then after thinking a moment came back with, "And I am Sleeping Beauty!"

Black Friday
As usual, Cindy was out of the house at 3:42 AM, and returned sometime after 4 PM. I rode herd on the kids, and kept them all in line. Though I cleaned the kitchen and other various rooms, being a dad, there were some things I didn't quite get around to, such as Ally's hair.....
In case you were wondering, I did clean up around her mouth, yet I feel very fortunate that you cannot see her non-color-coordinated pants.
Erin and Kenner also did their bit, demonstrating a little ditty that they learned somewhere:
It was very good day--at least up until bedtime....but if every day were perfect, we wouldn't appreciate those perfect days. Of course, on the flip side, it would be nice to experience them at least on the 'decade plan.'

Young minds thinking hard....
The kids have been busy writing up their Christmas lists in anticipation of Cindy's 12-hour foray on Black Friday.
Erin, for example, again wants a cell phone. We have laughingly brushed this off before, but she is very persistent.
Listen in on her conversation with Cindy:
Erin: 'Don't interrupt me Mom. Just listen to what I have to say. If I get a cell phone for Christmas, I promise I won't go over on the minutes. But IF I DID, I would pay for everything it costs for going over.'
Cindy: 'OK. That sounds like a good idea.'
Erin: With a newly spawned big grin....'Really? Then...then I can get a cell phone?'
Cindy: 'No.'
Erin: 'But you said it was a good idea!'
Cindy: 'Yes. You said IF you got a cell phone you would pay if you went over. IF you got one, yes, you would pay. And you're not getting a cell phone.'
Cindy has just finished relating the above to me, and just made this comment at the end, 'I just love spinning a web, sucking them in, then sucking out their blood! That poor delusional girl! Yeah, she thinks we're gonna get her a cell phone--she can't even keep track of her shoes! Or her toothbrush on most days! Or her backpack! Or her clothes! Or her earrings!'
(I would like to say that she said the preceding in a lucid, straightforward manner, but she was actually convulsing into paroxysms of laughter between each word.)
She continued between debilitating laughs, 'And on a totally unrelated subject, she asked for a razor to shave her legs today--heck, she can't even clip her own fingernails!'
'Erin probably thinks I am the meanest mother in the world!'
Probably. And since I am the one posting this, she will probably think the same about her Daddo!

What a crappy neighborhood!
Cindy and I went out to do some pre-Friday shopping and some errands, and when we got home we found that flocks consisting of thousands of migratory birds had been flitting around our entire neighborhood and the surrounding fields.
As they flitted hither and yon in synchronized patterns, they also bombed the entire neighborhood.
In case you are interested, such little birds obviously love to eat red berries. With little seeds. And also some other roughage of a variety not clearly ascertained (no pun intended) except through more detailed analyses of their spoor than I am willing to undertake.
Let's just say that the entire neighborhood looks like the aftermath of a battle of epic proportions between toy soldiers--after the ambulances have taken away the casualties.

I should never doubt my genius....
Makenna called me at work to tattle on Erin tonight—but in a chatty way, so I knew that no violence had taken place (Kenner has perfected the art of crying mightily from even the slightest touch).
Then Erin got on the other phone to deny what Kenner was tattling about, and to go on and say that Kenner had wanted her to do it ('it' being whatever it was that she said she didn’t do that she did).
In the end, they were competing, each telling me that they loved me more than the other one. I had a meeting to get to, and since they wouldn’t stop talking, I had a brilliant idea.
I told the girls, ‘The one who loves me the most will be the one who hangs up first!’
The phone lines went dead.
I grinned at my evil genius.
Of course, 2 seconds later my phone rang. It was Erin.
‘Dad, just to let you know, I hung up first! I love you! Goodbye!’

A Real Kisseroo!
The other day while I was holding Ally, Cindy instructed Ally to give me a big kiss.
She put her hands on my cheeks, puckered her lips, made lip contact, and then maintained said contact for a full five seconds. She pulled back, smiled, and then came in for another kiss, this time pressing harder and closing her eyes. She then pulled away (surfacing for air?) then did it again, this time putting one arm around my neck, and the other one around my head, playing with the hair on the back of my head.
My first thought, was ‘What the....???’
My second thought was, ‘She’s been watching the kissing scenes in those Antonio Banderas ‘Zorro’ movies too much!’
My third thought was, ‘When she reaches her teenage years, she will be under lock and key!’
My fourth thought was, ‘I wonder if I need to bring up the subject of ‘No tongue’??’
Cindy just chortled—and chortled and chortled and chortled--Ally had done the same to her earlier.
(We just hope it was something picked up from a movie, and not from experience! Do we need chaperones in nursery?? haha)

Prophetic counsel for our time
This is kind of long but the prophetic counsel given from Elder Maxwell back in 1978 is amazing.

Pee at last, pee at last, thank thee mightily, pee at last!
Ally sat on her little potty and did her trick tonight. That is the second time in two days!
We patted her on the head and gave her a piece of chocolate.
She cackled with glee!
And though it is currently just a 1-act show, we're hoping for a second act (a.k.a. Act #2) to be added to her repertoire soon!

Modern-Day Slavery 101
Erin, like many girls her age, is 11 and acts like thirteen (with the accent definitely on 'TEEN').
She had some chores assigned to her today, so as Cindy and I were telling her to chop-chop and get it done, she commented, "Why should I have to do it? I'm not your slave!"
I grinningly replied, 'And your Mom and I were not put on this earth to be your slave to clean up your messes either.'
She volleyed back with a grin, 'It's not my fault I was born--it's yours!'
Cindy calmly replied, 'That may be so, but it's not a mistake we can undo!'
'Not easily, anyway.' I added helpfully.
Erin then gave Cindy an affronted look, and responded, 'Wait a minute! Did you say mistake? Are you saying I was a mistake?'
We both just smiled sweetly back at her.
Actually, she was no mistake, but she is surely mistaken about what is and isn't slavery--especially for a minor!

She'll never make a psychiatrist rich with that attitude!
At bedtime after putting Cameron to bed, Cindy came into the bedroom and made the following comment in a semi-frustrated tone:
"How is it that you can't engage him in any sort of conversation during the day, but when you're tucking him in bed he has lots of things he wants to talk about and can't ever seem to stop talking?"
I replied soothingly, 'It sounds like you need to relax--to let it all out. Why don't you blog about it?'
"Hah!" she replied, "Blogging doesn't help relieve stress--it just makes me relive it!!"

It's Not Fair!
My oldest daughter can be quite a joy...at times, at other times....not so much.
Mornings. Not so much. Today....definitely not so much!
We have the luxury of having the school bus pick the kids up right in front of our house and taxi them to school. I love it. He comes at 8:20 and they need to be ready by then.
Every morning I go into each of the kids' rooms and wake them up at 7:30. I am nice about how I wake them up. None of the light flipping on or banging pots and pans or spraying water in their faces. Instead, I lovingly go in and rub their back and whisper, "It's time to get up. Rise and shine little sweetie pie, sweet noogie, sugar plum princess." etc. etc.
Allyson and Cameron usually greet me before I greet them. They are always waiting. Makenna will try to roll the other direction (probably so I will rub her back) but when I leave her room she follows--usually within 15 seconds. Erin...not so much.
This is how it went with Erin today.
Me: "Erin, it's time to get up."
Erin, adjusting to see the clock: "NO!"
Me: "Yes Erin. It is 7:30 and time to get up."
Erin: "NO!"
Me: "Yes. Get up and come get your breakfast."
Erin: "NO!"
I exit the room gritting my teeth and go see my other children who will be nice.
Sometime in the next 10 minutes (so it is now 7:40) she stumbles downstairs and after using the bathroom comes to get breakfast.
After messing around with the other kids and all of them bickering about something that has absolutely no meaning I try repeatedly to get her to eat quicker and "Get upstairs to take your shower!"
ME: "Get upstairs and take your shower! It is almost 8:00!!"
Erin: She ignores me and continues to goof around.
Me: "Go now and get your shower! You are running out of time!!"
Erin: No response.
Me: "GO SHOWER! NOW!!!!"
She goes upstairs and continues to goof off with Cameron while the water is running for the shower. The time is now 8:03. (Remember, the bus comes at 8:20. Arrrgh.)
Me: "GET IN THE SHOWER NOW!"
Erin: "Ha Ha Ha! I'm going!" (Spoken with attitude, of course.)
Me: "I will not be coming to knock on the door to tell you that it is time to get out. You are on your own and if you miss the bus then I will be waking you up at 7 AM every day."
That will teach her, I'm sure. At this point I start secretly hoping she will miss the bus. Ahhh yes. What a great lesson she would learn. She would definitely realize Mom is right and she should always listen to her and be respectful.
She finally emerges from the shower at 8:12. (Remember, the bus comes at 8:20.)
At 8:17 I am downstairs urging the other kids to get their shoes on, etc., and Erin is still upstairs doing .....I don't know what. I wasn't looking in on her.
8:19.
Me: "The bus is at Samuel's house." (This is 2 stops from our house.)
Erin calling from upstairs: "ARE YOU SERIOUS?'
Me, with a slight tone of 'I told you so' drippng from my voice: "It sure is!!" (Smiling from ear to ear---well at least inside I was.)
Erin: "WHERE IS MY BACKPACK?"
Me: "I have no idea."
Erin: "CAN YOU FIND IT FOR ME?'
Me: "No."
Cameron: "HURRY ERIN! THE BUS IS AT SETH'S" (1 stop from our home.)
Erin rushes downstairs, throws her socks on, and grabs her shoes, at which point Cameron yells, "DON'T EVEN UNTIE THEM. JUST SLIP THEM ON! HURRY ERIN!"
How sweet for him to be so concerned about her missing the bus. Here it is pulling up in front of our house. Cameron and Makenna are out on the porch, not knowing what to do. Should they go without Erin?
Cameron: "Mom. The bus is here."
Me: "Go get on it. Bye, I love you. Have a great day."
Makenna: "What about Erin?"
Me: "Don't worry about Erin. You two kids just go. I love you."
Cameron: "Is Erin going to miss the bus?"
Me: "I think so. It's okay." (to myself...'actually it's great!! Now she will really learn a lesson.')
Erin continues to run around like a chicken with her head cut off. Her school items are right on the floor in the den, somewhat scattered around. Her sweatshirt is inside out and the zipper of her backpack won't zip. I keep waiting for the bus to drive off. Why is it still there?
Erin: "Is he waiting for me?"
Me: "I don't know. If he is, you had better just grab your stuff and go."
As she throws her coat on I mention,
"By the way, tomorrow I will be waking you up at 7:00."
Erin: "UUUHHH! THAT'S NOT FAIR!"
Me: "Have a great day. I love you."
It's not fair? It's not fair? It's not fair? It's not fair?
No it is not fair.
It's not fair that I have to wake her up every morning only to be treated rudely.
It's not fair that I have to get upset with her before she will get in the shower.
It's not fair that because she runs late every day I am the one running around for her backpack, finding her jacket, etc.
It's not fair that her room is left in a disgusting mess because she is always running late out the door.
and.....
It is especially not fair that our bus driver is so dang patient!

Grape Expectations
Our kids find the most, um, interesting[?] ways to pass their time.
Exhibit 1: Erin made a baskeball court like this:
Then she made 2 aluminum foil basketballs, and challenged me to a game. The gameboard was place in the middle of the table, and the rule was that you had to keep your elbow on the table when shooting. Unfortunately, Erin had never played marbles. Fortunately, I had.
She got much better by the end, so I encouraged her to challenge Cameron. Unfortunately, Cameron beat her too.
Exhibit 2: Last Monday after school, as Makenna and the neighbor boy Seth cheered her on, Erin stuffed 17 grapes into her mouth.
Postnote: Erin said she had to spit about half of them out in order to begin breathing again. (She obviously forgot that she had a nose.....)

My first book signing

Yesterday my good friend, Miriam, and I went to our first ever book signing event. Richard Paul Evans, (author of The Christmas Box and many other great books), was in town. We had such a great time. He was so down to earth and I love hearing about some of his experiences he had while writing the book. He is an LDS author but his books are not LDS books. They are always uplifting and inspiring. He told about when he was writing a particular part in the book and when finished realized that what he had just written came from a higher power. He was overcome with emotion and immediately got down on his knees and thanked Heavenly Father for giving him these impressions.
If you have never read any of his books I would recommend all of them. You can check out his website www.richardpaulevans.com . He is also giving away free books. When you get to his website click on the link to the left titled "free books". He has boxes filled with 25 copies of "The Christmas Box". You only pay $15 shipping. My box is already ordered!
Thanks Miriam. I can't wait till next year. Next time we will bring our cameras like everyone else did.

Christmas shopping was never so easy!
When asked what he wanted for Christmas, Cameron's wish list was short and sweet.
"Pokemon cards and money."
When Cindy followed up with, "And what will you do with the money?" he immediately replied, "Buy more Pokemon cards!"
He had a "Does not compute" (i.e., quizzical) look when Cindy asked if it would be OK to just flush his Christmas money down the toilet!

Last Night’s Dinnertime Banter
In no particular order....
“Makenna, please stop singing and just eat!”
“Allyson, come back over here, sit down, and eat!”
"Allyson, you have to eat something!"
And then there was my personal favorite:
“Makenna, get your hand out of your armpit and eat your dinner!”
Note: Because of the menu I was tempted to say “Delicious porkchops, Delicious Porkchop!” but I decided I didn't fancy getting a fat lip.

Watch out Imelda--The Floyds are in pursuit!
It was a combination of many small things that led to many more things, much like streamlets combining to form a mighty river. Or like strands of string being woven to make an unbreakable rope. Or like one child puking and causing the entire room to puke. (My mind is teeming with many more similes, but.....)
It started innocently enough. Cindy was already pondering Black Friday shopping. Then a Kohls ad with good sales arrived. Then a Kohls catalog arrived with a 30%-off coupon. And the final kicker was that we had Saturday morning free to both go shopping there.
Many things were purchased, but the focus was on footware. After Cindy and I went, and then Cindy and Erin went (though not only to Kohls), this was the result....
Cindy is quite embarrassed, and hastens to add that a couple pairs are going back.
Now the only problem is where to put them. Do you see any room here?
Me either.
And you may not see me either for awhile or perhaps not even until the resurrection, as Cindy will now be really embarrassed, as she didn't know that 1) I took the shoe rack picture, and 2) That I have found the result blog-worthy.
However, Cindy should take some small solace in the fact that I am retiring 2 pairs of very old shoes, including my pair of black work/church shoes, which pair has performed good service almost every day for 7-odd years. [Insert sentimental sniffle here.]

Impertinent Chastening?
Erin, almost 12 I might add, called down the stairs at 10:05 PM and sang, "Someone come tuck me in!"
I was just finishing the last blog entry, so I hit PUBLISH and then trotted upstairs.
I threw the covers on her, and then gave her a couple of good thumps on her back.
'Why did you do that?' she asked.
'Um, because you're solid like a brick wall!'
I told her good night, and patted her arm.
She rolled her big blues and said,
"A HUG Dad! I'm your kid, not a brick wall!"

Smarty-Pants
The kids love the movie "National Treasure" and tonight they watched it again.
In the very last scene of the movie, the leading lady gives the leading man a map.
He queries, 'What's it to?' and she smiles demurely, nods toward the house and says coyly, 'You'll figure it out!' and takes off for the house.
A lightbulb goes on in his head and he starts running after her.
Cameron goes, 'I wonder what it's a map to?'
Makenna guessed, 'Maybe to the next treasure!'
Erin knowingly teased, 'I know where they're going!' And gave a little giggle.
'Where? Where? Where?' the other kids asked.
'I won't tell you....but oh yeah, I know right where the map leads to!!'
She went on, mostly for my ears, 'Oh yeah, I know. I'm in sixth grade. When you're in 5th and 6th grade you get info.....yep info-mation!' She grinned knowingly at me again.
To get her mind off it we went jogging around the block a couple times--at 9:45 PM in 45-degree windy weather.
As we walked back in the door, she was saying half to herself, 'Yep, info-mation!"

Tricks and Treats....
Tonight was trick-or-treating night in our town, so we joined the rest of humanity in flocking to the Parktown subdivision. The kids were dressed like this:
Our neighbor's dog went dressed like this:
We had a great time (it was light for the first 70 minutes or so....and the take was vast!
We stopped by our old neighbors' house afterwards, and then on the way home we stopped for gas, and boy, let me tell you--this was certainly a TREAT not a TRICK!

Scary Photo!
As Halloween proper is only 19 minutes away, I thought I would post this scary photo. I hope the intensity of it doesn't make your children break into tears, run and hide in the corner, wet themselves, etc.
Background: Erin asked Cindy to make a 'mad face' for posterity, and this was the result.
Though it is somewhat lacking in the real intensity of her authentic mad face (the eyes are not flaming), it is a reasonable facsimile of the face that made her 2nd-graders cry in the 1990s and still makes her children flee for safety (heck, sometimes I flee too)!

All Thumbs!
On Monday Cindy's Dad tried to teach Allyson how to do 'thumbs up,' but at the time she never quite got it.
However, the next morning when Cindy came into the bedroom to wake up Makenna, Allyson called out from her crib, 'I DIT it, Mom, I DID IT!'
Because it was dark, Cindy couldn't see what she could do right away, but going over to her crib she could see Allyson lying there with both of her thumbs up!
It seems that when she woke up that morning she had just lain there and worked on this skill until she did it!
Now she really has the hang of it!![]()

Trunk or Treat Photos
Last night was our first foray of the short Halloween season.
It was a rousing success for the Pirate, whose booty was vast....
And for the Little Girl, who found lots of sugar and spice and everything nice....
And for a Mommo, a Princess who could clearly enunciate 'Trick or Treat,' and a Witch who conjured up a very full and lumpy bag of goodies....
And a sushi-loving pumpkin-carving Daddo....

So eternally grateful for that knowledge....
Makenna disappeared for awhile tonight before bedtime, and when I called out to her I heard her reply that she was 'pooping.'
'Nuf said!
I was in reading a bedtime story to Allyson on a bed in their room when she finally reappeared.
She came in and said excitedly, 'Dad! Dad! I pooped out one that was about THIS long!!' and spread her hands about 12 inches apart.
First, that is really much more information than I would ever need, much less want.
Second, I am concerned about the hint of pride I noticed in her pronouncement.
Third, I sincerely hope that she is merely a budding fisherman, and thus multiplying the length of her 'catch' by a factor of 2 or more.
Fourth, I am glad that she flushed the toilet rather than saving it for my later perusal.
Fifth, she's surely a Floyd!

Deep Thoughts....Yea Verily, Even Deep Stinky Thoughts
At bedtime tonight Cameron asked Cindy to lay in bed with him because he was really cold.
After about 5 minutes of quiet chatting, Cindy gently asked, 'Are you warm yet?'
'Noooo......,' said Cameron, 'Maybe it would help if I let my fart out!'
He continued, 'Because that's how you make a bathtub a hot-tub! You're butt's the jet!'
I can only hope that Cindy quickly exited, stage right.

CONTEST TIME!!!!!
Erin has been saying this hip phrase for a good 2 weeks now at 'particle accelerator' speed, and I finally got her to say it slow enough to consciously register what she was saying.
I then asked her to explain the slang involved, and that finally led to comprehension (not that there's a lot to comprehend, but it is clean!)
Your challenge, if you choose to accept it, is to transcribe what she is saying and submit it as a comment. The winner will win a major prize (at the exciting Cracker-Jack prize level!
Listen and win (or get real frustrated trying to make sense of it)!

Beauty and the Geek
Last night the New Beginnings[?--I get all these programs mixed up....] had a Daddy-Daughter dinner and activity entitled 'Beauty and the Geek.'
Erin didn't see my get-up beforehand, and let's just say that she wasn't disappointed. (Thanks again Wes and Barb for that Grenada shirt--a gift that keeps on giving 15 years after the fact!)
One of the activities was to teach the girls how to tie a tie around their dad's neck, and Erin, being an unusually quick study (as it wasn't work-related?!), was able to tie mine in 11 seconds flat.
The next part activity was to have the dad style their daughter's hair. I let my creative impulses flow freely, and came up with the following:

For some reason, she didn't like it so much, but she was a really good sport about it too....(and I must add that Br. Vilches braids hair like a pro!)
A fun night!

The Smoky Mountains Part II: Other Adventures
This was the best part of the cabin.....
The girls loved this at the cabin too....
Curse you, Sponge-Bob Squarepants! (or a loincloth, as in this episode)
On the rocks....

Smoky Mountain Photos Part I: The Natural Beauty
On a nature trail by an old homestead....
Grotto Falls--a 3-mile roundtrip hike--the kids barely made it. Except for Ally--I (Daddo) carried her the whole way ....
The kids hiking....
Erin took this great picture!
Erin begged us to take a picture of her in front of this big rock, so we did--after she took a picture of the rest of us in front of it!

My 20 Minutes of Fame....
The Comedy Barn was one of the highlights, and the kids especially liked it when I was called up on stage with 2 other unfortunate gents.
First the emcee grilled each of us--I don't think that he had ever met up with a Japanese translator before....
He then trained us to open and close our mouths when hit on the head with his clubs.
And though the video ends at mid-song (we have a cheap software that hit its limit at 40 seconds), you'll get the idea.....
We can rent you the DVD of the entire show for a mere pittance....

Palin Country
We found out 2 days ago that Sarah Palin was going to be in Troy (a town in our county) today, so we got tickets and Cindy and me, her mom and dad, and our neighbor and her friend went for the show. The line was a quarter-mile long when we joined, and by the time we got in, it was still that long (and we were over 2 hours early)! That gave Cindy and her mom time to buy some buttons--Cindy was attracted to a Joe the Plumber button.
By the time it started, it was standing room only, and as expected, she gave a great speech.
More Pics....
Yes, it was a lot of fun!
Funny, it's the other 'seasoned' VP nominee who is basically walking about with his mouth taped shut.

Smoky Mountains Trip
We arrived safely back home Monday night from a 4-day family vacation to the Smoky Mountains/Pigeon Forge.
I expect there will be a number of posts and/or photos about this in the coming days, but here are a couple of lessons learned interspersed with some observations, in no particular order:
1. SpongeBob Marathons are just another reason to not get cable/satellite at home.
2. Boys don’t like to sleep in rooms with a vase on the nightstand.
3. Hot-tubs are great for keeping kids entertained both morning and night!
4. The Comedy Barn show is still the best show in town (especially for the kids, and especially when Daddo spends 20 minutes up on the stage during one of the routines).
5. Makenna had a new catch-phrase when she would jump out of the van: “Show me the gift shop!”
6. During peak season, you have to ‘go against the traffic flow’ to get anywhere.
7. Tourist-trap towns are a great way to redistribute the wealth--in a non-coercive way.
8. 12-oz. boxes of Russell Stover caramels or chocolates at the Outlet Store for $1.15 each. Too bad we didn’t have a rooftop carrier with us!
9. Things forgotten: A water thermos, kids’ toothbrushes, and standard-issue manacles, muzzles, and straitjackets (or the equivalent amounts of duct tape to serve these 3 purposes).
10. I never knew our family could pack away a ½ gallon container of ice cream at one sitting.

Oh the trauma!
This morning I decided to give Allyson's hair a little trim. I just wanted to keep in more of a bob rather than let it grow long. So after giving it a little spray with the spray bottle I commenced to comb and then trim. As she saw the little bits of hair I had cut off and then placed in the discard pile she gasped and exclaimed,
"MOMMY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING???? YOU ARE CUTTING OFF MY HAIR!!!"
Then I would explain that it was okay and just a trim and I was the only one allowed to ever ever ever cut hair.
Snip. Snip.
"MOMMY!!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING???? YOU ARE CUTTING OFF MY HAIR!!!"
About 2 seconds after finishing this 20 second job she had run out and completely forgotten the whole thing.

Amaizing Grace, how sweet the ear.....
This evening we went with our neighbors to a nearby Corn Maze (a.k.a. "Maize Maze"). Thanks to hurricane Ike a month ago, the admission was lowered to $5 per adult and $3 per kid.
It was a first for us, and the kids enjoyed running around and finding the dead-ends beforehand. It took about 40 minutes to go through, and then the kids were able to use an air-powered 'Corn Cannon' to shoot ears of corn 100+ yards.
Note to self--mosquitoes obviously love cornfields at dusk.
By the end we were scurrying back to the van to avoid the little critters!
We then went back home and our 2 families had a little firepit cookout with a number of other neighbors.
Yes, we love our neighborhood!

It must be a female thing.....
We were at Micky-D's in the Playland area last night with our neighbor and kids (actually, she took her kids and all of our kids, and Cindy and I showed up a bit later...), and after being there awhile our neighbor's daughter came over to report that she couldn't find her sandals.
At this point Erin--who had been sitting with us adults--piped up to say that she had seen 2 teenagers come in a bit earlier, and had seen them take a pair of shoes from the shoe rack, leave quickly, go across the street to a car in the Arby's parking lot, then leave.
I had to leave with Erin soon thereafter, as Cindy and the neighbor waited to talk to the manager.
So anyway, on the way home I get a call from Cindy's cell phone and I let Erin answer. Cindy was obviously asking Erin for a description of these teenage hooligans.
Erin replied, 'Well, the girl had long black hair, and was wearing a black jacket with "Abercrombie" and something else on it, and underneath that she had a white shirt on. And she was also wearing blue jeans. And he had really blonde hair, and was wearing...' and continued with the same detailed description.
I was shocked and awed.
This amount of detail from the girl who can't hear a parent from 5 feet away, and is totally oblivious to anything that goes on in front of her unless it has frosting or Zac Efron or Hannah Montana on it!
Maybe she'll be recruited by the CIA?

A blast from the past....
In my family emails of yesteryear (I am merely a blogger now), I would sometimes take on the identity of an advice columnist as I attempted to explain the craziness that was (and still is) our home.
Anyhoo, we were looking up info from our old emails and I found two of my favorites from 2002 and 2005 (and these are more than just loosely based on actual events)....
* * *
Dear Mr. Manners,
In an attempt to civilize/teach morals to our two eldest children (ages 2 and 5), we purchased and began reading illustrated scripture stories to our kids every night. However, a year later, when it is time for them to pick a story to read before bedtime, if there isn't a sword or spear in ACTION, or someone getting their arm or head cut off, or someone getting a small stone implanted into their forehead, or someone getting tar-and-feathered, or SATAN playing a prominent part, they won't pick it! My 2-year old son always asks us if the people in the pictures are fighting or killing someone--and if not, he wants a different story! And whenever we do read these gory stories, they both excitedly pore over the pictures and point, saying, "Is THIS the blood from when he got his head cut off?" and are disappointed if the scene described in words is not shown in gory detail in the picture!
Also, my son told his dad last week, "I will shoot your eye out....with a GUN!"
Is this normal?
Am I just overreacting?
Sincerely,
We Now Lock Our Bedroom Door at Night
________________________________
Dear Doorlocks,
What wonderfully mischievous little imps!
Most pop psychologists would, naturally, attribute such a fascination with violence, blood, and the occult to the usual worn-out whipping boy--the ever-entertaining (and totally harmless) Bugs Bunny & Roadrunner Show.
But in actuality the source of this fascination is merely a healthy and normal child's desire to play games with their parents' minds. I would bet money that your children sleep soundly through the night, and conversely, that your sleep is restless.
Anyway, enjoy the moment! All too soon they will be wanting you to read the stories about children getting advances on their inheritances!
Sincerely,
Mr. Manners
PS: Have you considered locking up your larger cutlery at night as a short-term countermeasure?
* * *
Dear Mr. Manners,
Our children have very good hearing, and they picked up this terrible phrase from the Simpsons that their Dad was quietly telling me. And now they are imaginatively expanding on it. How can I get them to stop saying such things?
Sincerely,
Aghast in Dayton
Dear Aghast in Dayton (may I call you Agh?)
Sadly, this is a more common occurrence than you might think. Being somewhat clairvoyant and judging from your mental state, I would guess that it is not the relatively innocuous, 'I'm Bart Simpson, who the he-- are you?' but rather Homer's mellifluous, even rhapsodic, "They're the suckiest suck of sucks that ever sucked a suck.' It comes trippingly off the tongue, don't you think? But I digress....
And let me guess. The sweet children have expanded this to such things as 'That the poopiest poop of poop that ever pooped a poop' or 'That's the pukiest puke of puke that ever puked a puke.'
I commiserate with you. As for countermeasures to this verbal onslaught, I am sure that your husband is still recovering from the laser-eye glare you gave him after your child overheard and then uttered the phrase, so that is already taken care of (though I'm sure you were chuckling up to that point...!).
As for the children, much like a song that you can't get out of your head, until something else takes its place it will not be relegated to conscious oblivion. May I suggest the harmless phrase, 'I'm Yosemite Sam and you're a sassafrassin' frigglevrassin' varmint!'
Sincerely,
Mr. Manners

Rebel without a Pause
Tomorrow is picture day at school, so Cindy gave Cameron a quick trim around the ears and neck at bedtime.
Afterwards, he complained that his hair was still wet, so Cindy gave it a quick blow-dry.
For some reason, he even acquiesced to a snapshot (after Cindy grabbed him at the onset of his 'bolt and run' instinct....)
I think this is called the 'James Dean look'?

Makenna? Our Makenna?
Makenna got a 'card pulled' at school today, and her teacher wrote a note for us to read.
It read, "Makenna was on a yellow card today. She was reminded several times that she was not supposed to be talking loudly in the hallway and continued to do so."
Imagine our shock!
Our Makenna talking loudly!? And not listening to what an adult tells her!?? I can't imagine why the teacher didn't realize that Makenna was merely whispering as softly as she could. It's not Kenner's fault that her whispers usually don't fall much below 70 decibels! That probably also explains her poor listening skills--the poor dear is probably deaf, bless her heart!
Cindy had Kenner write an apology letter, dictated by Cindy and modified slightly at the end by Kenner.
It looks like Kenner needs more spelling lessons too!
As for suck-up lessons, she has obviously had plenty!

Magic 101
From what I understand, yesterday Cindy was asking Allyson the following question (it goes without saying that it was rhetorical in nature):
"Ally, is Mommy pretty?"
Ally never really deigned to respond verbally. Or via gestures. Or via a nod. Or via a big thumbs up. Nothing--Nada--Nil--Nashi.
Shortly thereafter Ally came up to her holding a princess wand (with a star on the end), and touched Cindy with it, and said, 'Make Mommy pretty! Make Mommy pretty!'
As Cindy later asked me, 'So, does she think it takes magic to make me pretty?'
Obviously another rhetorical question. (As I know so well, Cindy has yet to be hit with--or even suffer a glancing blow--from an ugly stick.
[I am working from memory here, so I am sure that Cindy will revise it later....)
***Cindy here to revise***
We were on the phone with Grandma and I was with Allyson, prompting her what to say to Grandma. She was repeating everything I said wonderfully. I thought I would try this one,
"Allyson, tell Grandma that your mommy is very pretty."
Thoughtful silence. Then, "I need my wand."
"What?" I asked.
"I need my wand," she replied
Then she hopped down and grabbed her fairy wand from off the floor and started waving it in my face saying, "I make Mommy pretty."
Ummmmmmm thanks.
****Note****
Louis watched me type up the revised edition of his post and told me to just go ahead and delete what he wrote.
"No thanks," was my reply.
I like everybody seeing how I tell him a story and he only half listens.

Curse you, Craig's List!
So yesterday Cindy called me at work, and said, "I see a listing on Craig's List for free walnuts."
That perked me up immediately. (Perhaps more the word 'free' than the word 'walnuts'? And there's nothing I can do about that. It's hard-wired into me.)
Anyway, I knew I had some late meetings, so I suggested she come by and pick me up and we could make a long lunch of it.
And let me digress and say that Superman didn't really exist. I changed into 'playclothes' in the middle seat of the van as Cindy drove, and really, there is NO WAY that he could've made the wardrobe change in a phone booth!
So, 7-odd boxes later, Cindy drove me back to work and she took care of unloading them and the millions of maggots that were beginning to emerge from the boxes due to the vibrating van. (Some insect lays eggs in the green covering over walnuts, and their young (maggots, one and all) live happily in that warm, moist environment).
Cindy was sufficiently grossed out. (But the van got a good vacuuming as a result!)
Anyway, last night I started removing the maggot-ridden crust of some of the walnuts. I was doing it manually with a knife, and an hour later I had a bucket full.
Tonight I continued the work, but I drilled a walnut-sized hole in my old worktable and then smacked the walnuts through the hole with a mallet, thereby removing the husk in a couple seconds. Things went quicker by a factor of 10 or more.
Anyway, I told you the above gory details in order to show you the results of my mostly gloveless labors.
And even searching on Google I have yet to find anyone with a method of removing these stains.
When I showed Cindy the stains that were a badge of honor reflecting (though black doesn't reflect, so I am speaking metaphorically) all the work I did tonight, she, being the kind--even genteel--soul that she is, exclaimed, "It looks like you've had your hands up a cow's butt!"
Later on she cackled again and said, "It looks like you gave a cow an enema!"
All I can say is, I hope these walnuts aren't rotten!

Ahh, feel the breeze!
As of 11 AM this morning, we now have a storm door on our front door. (Our good neighbors had one installed at the same time, and thus the contractor doing it gave us an even better deal!)
The contractor was the building manager/contractor when our new house was built and he treated us good and fairly, but with the housing downturn he was laid off along with half of the company (after 16 years!) and we found out that he was looking for odd jobs until something comes along, so it was a win-win for us both.
Don't be surprised if I am writing next week about having had the basement framed!

Aching Calves
Cameron is the naturally gifted sports dude of the family (it obviously skipped a generation on the Floyd side), but this year soccer has been more than a match for him.
His coach has managed to achieve something I thought was impossible—run Cameron into the ground during practice. (By the way, we do like the coach and his coaching style.)
In previous years Cameron would be full of vigor and vim, eagerly awaiting the fun of practice, and still be full of it at the end of practice.
However, this year he has come to dread practices and he comes home sore, tottering like a grandpa. He even demands a heating pad for his calves at bedtime.
And there is a 3rd grade teammate (Cameron is in 4th) who is just an amazing natural athlete—he can run faster and longer than anyone else, kick harder and more accurately, and is a gentleman team player to boot! (When other teammates miss a good kick or let a goal through, he is the first to call out, ‘That’s OK [So-and-so]! Good try!’)
Anyway, this (one-way) competition has also served to spur Cameron to greater heights.
But it has paid off—he scored 2 goals the last game (the final score was 12-2, and that was after half of Cameron’s team switched sides to help the other team), for a total of 3 this year.
As Cameron proudly told me, ‘I even stole the ball away from [the amazing kid] 2 times when he was playing for the other team!’

Making the Day of Others on a Daily Basis
Today Makenna woke up crying with a very sore side, and she explained that she fell off of the merry-go-round at school yesterday. Cindy decided to keep her home, as the inevitable crying and whining fits that Makenna is so proficient in were more than she could stomach.
So all day she kept telling Cindy she had a fever and kept begging and begging and begging and begging and begging and begging (Makenna is very good at this...) to have Cindy take her temperature.
In exasperation and to show her that she was imagining things, Cindy finally took her temperature in the afternoon, and just as she expected, it was 99.6 (i.e., as Makenna expected!) An hour later, it was 100, and soon thereafter it was 102.
And tonight as Cindy discussed this with the neighbor, the possibility that Makenna's side hurting might be the result of a kidney infection was posed, and then the following conversation ensued:
Cindy: 'What causes a kidney infection?'
Friend: 'I don't know.'
Cindy: 'Is it whining? Because if it is, she DEFINITELY has one!
And on a totally unrelated note, we have found that lots of people--mostly mothers, it seems--seem to find great solace, peace of mind, and soothing relief through reading our blog entries and how we ably[?] deal with our beloved spawns of ......I mean, children. (We are proud to be the virtual Prozac?)
I can't imagine why....

As you might expect....and now exposed to the world!
Our old (as in previous) neighbor mentioned that if I checked out the Street View feature on Google Maps at our old address that Cindy and I were shown in all our glory.
So I looked, and I found this:
Hmmm....as near as I can tell, I am edging the yard (with one of those manual tortures--I mean EDGERS), and Cindy is either fascinated with my skill, spurring me on to greater action, standing idly by, or glaring at me.
I report, you decide!

Ruminations in the Dark
During the two evenings without power we had minimal—yet sufficient—lighting, and one soon learned to cope with it.
Interestingly, my first thought when I walked inside Tuesday evening after the electricity had been restored was that the lighting seemed so awfully BRIGHT—almost TOO bright!
When I mentioned this observation to Cindy, she added that we should turn off the main breakers at 8:30 PM so the kids will get in bed earlier!
Since as US citizens we are told every day by the media that we are over-eating, over-spending, over-polluting, over-consuming (you pick the flavor-of-the-day consumption crisis—oil, gas, ice cream, butter, prescriptions.....), over-reacting, over-invading, and of course over-warming, maybe OVER-LIGHTING should be added to the list of reasons for shuddering with guilt when thinking about this great nation (at least for those so inclined).
Knock yourselves out, ye self-flagellators!

Blowin’ in the Wind
We had a major windstorm Sunday afternoon—Hurricane Ike’s final hurrah, as it were--and lost power at home (and at my work) until Tuesday afternoon.
We consider ourselves to be the lucky ones, as many of our friends and coworkers and are still without power.
The Ohio tree population and house shingle population suffered tremendous losses, but there were few human injuries. Driving around, you could see an endless array of trees with tops broken off, split trees, uprooted trees, and of course tree branches all over the place. Fortunately, the small trees in our yard (and in the neighborhood) all survived, as did the shingles. The only real temporary loss in the neighborhood was a snap-together shed (that we put back together on Monday).
The kids enjoyed eating pancakes and eggs cooked on the campstove and grill,
and we parents enjoyed putting the kids to bed when it got dark at 8:30. We are certainly glad we had 3 crank-type LED lanterns, 2 crank-type LED flashlights, and 2 LED headlamps. The kids used the LED lanterns as night-lights, and by morning they were still glowing dimly.
Our neighborhood became even closer tight-knit and everyone helped everyone else as much as possible. For example, a friend called to tell us that WalMart had just gotten a shipment of ice, so Cindy and Darlene, (our neighbor),went and picked up 10 bags or so and distributed it to neighbors. We even had a ‘block dinner party’ Monday, with everyone bringing stuff from their slowly warming fridges and freezers to cook on the grill, etc.

We fared better than most (our main freezer stayed frozen), but some things we learned include:
1) Always keep that extra propane tank full.
2) Always have an extra gas container (so that you always have some if you need to run chainsaws, etc.—assuming, of course, that you have the right oil to mix with the gas....)
3) In a long-term emergency you will be sharing your food storage with neighbors in need—so what really constitutes a ‘year’s supply?’
4) An old-style phone that doesn’t rely on electricity is a lifesaver. (Our neighbor in our previous neighborhood had given us one of his extra ones a couple years ago, and it has come in handy many a time!) Cell phones are also very handy.
5) When everyone is in the same boat, you see the inherent goodness in people come out, and people are more likely to initiate conversations with total strangers.
More later, I’m sure.....

Another rite of passage....
Here it is 10:55 and I am sitting at the computer waiting for Erin to come home from her first real babysitting gig--with real kids (5!) and everything!
On her own accord she even packed a 'Fun Bag' of books, treats, and toys to entertain the kids. (The things they teach in her at Activity Days! She can be taught!!)
3+ hours and just a couple calls home for minor advice--sounds like she did a good job!

I've heard of Fantasy Football, but.....
Last night found Erin and myself driving madly (yet safely) at 5:50 PM to a soccer field in nearby Tipp City.
Through a calendar malfunction (isn’t that what you call it when you don’t read what’s on it?) we didn’t remember that Erin had a soccer game at 6 PM, so when Erin came home from playing in the neighborhood at 5:45 to tell us that the asst. coach’s husband (who lives in the same neighborhood) had told her about the game, there was a mad dash to get her ready.
Anyway, I told you that to tell you this.....
So, there I was driving as Erin was busy putting on her shin guards and other accoutrements of the trade. Then she suddenly began daydreaming out loud about what would happen when she arrived right before the game was to start.
[Loosely paraphrased, of course....my memory isn’t THAT good!]
‘Yes, the other team is probably saying, “Look at that team--they’re all pretty small and not very fast--they don’t look that tough.” And then when I get out of the car and start walking over, and the girls will then start saying, “Wha.....what is that THING?!! She’s so TALL! And so FAST! She’s......she’s like a MONSTER!!!”’
And when I looked over, Erin had this big contented grin of anticipation on her face.
Erin’s team went on to score the first goal and then to not score the next 5.
Obviously her daydreaming was more akin to Fantasy Soccer.
UPDATE: I did forget to mention that she got some good kicks in, stole the ball a couple times, and body-blocked a kicked ball a number of times!

Through the eyes of a child!
Makenna came home from school on Wednesday exclaiming, "Mrs. Novellino saw the clean desk fairy going into the 3rd grade classrooms last night after all the kids were gone!!"
"Who is the clean desk fairy?" I asked.
"She is the cousin of the tooth fairy. She was jealous that her cousin was the tooth fairy so when she saw the Clean Desk Fairy job was open she tried for it and got it! Her name is Deskalina! I wonder if she is going to come to the 2nd grade tonight?"
"What does she do when she comes?"
"She looks for kids whose desks are clean and leaves them a little treat."
"Do you have a clean desk?
"Oh yes. My desk is really clean."
Apparently it is clean because Deskalina did visit and she did leave a note and a little treat for Makenna. WaHOO!! I like Mrs. Novellino.
I just realized I have never told Makenna about the Clean Bedroom Fairy. He name is Roomalina. She leaves a treat if you leave your room clean when you go to school.....

Shut your Trapper!
Erin, Kenner and Cindy made a run to Target, and while there Erin began begging for a Trapper Keeper multi-function binder/planner/junk collector for her school stuff. She used the usual 'cock-and-bull' arguments about there not being enough room in her current folder, etc., etc.
Finally, in minor exasperation Cindy relented, but still wasn't too pleased.
As they continued through the store on the real reason for going (exchanging and buying curtains), Erin kept asking Cindy, "Mom, are you mad?"
"No Erin," she would reply with a sigh, "I'm not mad."
Even as they were driving home the same conversation continued, but then it took a slight detour off the beaten track:
Makenna said, "No, Mommy's not mad. If she was mad she would be yelling and screaming!"
"No," Erin countered, "When she's really mad she either sighs, shakes her head, tightens her lips up, or walk away."
As Erin was reeling off the above, Cindy relates that her lips actually WERE pressed tight and she actually WAS sighing.
UPDATE: As I was typing this in, Erin came in to show off her new planner. She sat down next to me and began to point out all the nifty stuff. In the middle of reeling off all of the nifty features--and without skipping a beat--she pointed to a pocket and said, 'and this is where I will put my cell phone when I get one, and this...."
Let me just go on the record and say that the day she gets a cell phone will be the day that my heart has decided to skip all its beats permanently.....
